1,2-pentodiol is an important organic
intermediate, used in the synthesis of propaniazole, a special fungicide for
cash crops; and excellent moisturizing performance and preservative effect,
used in skin cream, eye cream, skin care water, baby care products, sunscreen
and other skin care products, and an important raw material for polyester
fiber, surfactant, medicine and other products.

Shelf life: 2 years (not unsealed)
It is both a humectant and a preservative booster. Its structure resembles propylene glycol with a longer carbon chain, so it moisturises well and has some antimicrobial activity, which can let formulators reduce the dose of conventional preservatives. The protection a system actually delivers is established by preservative challenge testing; label claims are outside the scope of this page.
1% to 3% for moisturising and typically 2% to 5% as a preservative booster. The dose can be reduced when combined with phenoxyethanol or ethylhexylglycerin. Confirm with a preservative challenge test.
Hexanediol has one more carbon, stronger antimicrobial activity, slightly higher irritation potential and a higher price. Pentanediol is milder with a fainter odour. Mild and baby formulas favour pentanediol; stronger preservation uses hexanediol or a blend.
High-purity material is almost odourless with good skin tolerance. Lower purity may carry a slight odour, so check assay and colour on the datasheet.
